Description
From the perspective of health institutions, researchers may have different approaches to the concept of strategic management. In this paper we review these approaches in the literature, paying a close attention to Henry Mintzberg’s usage of strategic management in connection with planning, maneuvering, behavioral pattern, vision, and environmental positioning. We discuss the concepts of external environment, recurrent process, future orientation, core capabilities of health institutions, considered to be closely related to the strategic management. The discussion has been extended with a reference to Miles and Snow's study of strategic behavioral patterns. Furthermore, we provide examples of strategic management from real life experiences.
