Plecostomus luteus Godoy 1980: 29, figs. 15 and 16.

Holotype: MHNP 201, 310.0 mm SL (Figure 5): Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, Marcelino Ramos, Uruguay River, ~ 27°29′41″S, 51°50′37″W, ~ 370 m asl, 15 Apr 1980.

Remarks. Currently, the species is valid as Hypostomus luteus (Godoy 1980) (see Reis et al. 1990).

Within the jar where the specimen is preserved is a label stating “ typus ”. The same information is in the catalog of MHNP. In the description, Godoy (1980: 32) also referred to the specimen as the “ typus ”. Following Weber (2003), we interpret the “ typus ” mentioned by Godoy (1980) as the holotype.

Godoy (1980: 32) mentioned that the type specimen was collected in the “Pelotas River”. However, the locality is in the Uruguay River basin.
