Description

Banisteriopsis membranifolia (A. Jussieu) B. Gates (1982: 106)

Basionym: Banisteria membranifolia A. Jussieu (1833: 39).

Type:— BRAZIL. “In sepibus propre praedium vulgò As Bicas, prov. Minas Geraes”, A. de Saint-Hilaire. Lectotype (designated here): [MPU020073, photo!]; isolectotypes: P [P02428918, photo!] P [P02428917, photo!]. Figure 3.

Notes:— Banisteria membranifolia A. Jussieu was probably described based on collections from P (Stafleu & Cowan 1979). Anderson (2007) points out that Adrien de Jussieu usually had more than one specimen available for study from the Auguste Saint Hilaire collection. We could not find collections from Auguste Saint Hilaire with details from the original description of Jussieu (“ In seibus prope praedium vulgo As Bicas haud longè à vico Itabira de Mato Dentro in provincià Minas Gerais. Februario florebat.”).

Gates (1982) pointed out that the Saint Hilaire 705 at P herbarium is the likely holotype, even though there are no references to Bicas and Itabira de Mato Dentro in Minas Gerais. Three specimens numbered 705 are available from the Paris herbarium (P02428917, P02428918 and P02428919), all of them have a signature of Jussieu. But the MPU fragmentary specimen is being designated as a lectotype, because there are more details of the protologue beyond Jussieu’s handwriting.
