Description
The H2020 project POLYNSPIRE has been launched to demonstrate a set of innovative, cost effective and sustainable solutions, aiming at improving the energy and resource efficiency of post-consumer and post-industrial plastic recycling processes
The mix of polymers, discharged at the end of plastic recovery chain, can be used in the steel sector with the aim to recovery their carbon content replacing the fossil coal currently used in the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) process.
Within the POLYNSPIRE project, a new injection system has been designed and installed in the EAF of Ferriere Nord steel factory in Osoppo.
After the commissioning of the system, about 2400 heats have been carried out partially replacing the pulverized anthracite (up to 50%). The trials have been carried out in different conditions of variable amount of plastic (up to 50% respect injected coal).
Analysis about the effect of polymers injection within the EAF process has been carried out analysing more than 40 process variables considered as a performance indicator. The results on main indicators as slag composition (mainly FeO content), Total Harmonic Distortion, Sound Pressure Level, Average Active Power, Metallic yield are discussed. The main results of such analyses indicate that plastic can be used to replace coal, at least up to 50%. EAF energy performance is not varied by plastic utilization.
