This README file was generated on 2022-11-28 by G. Lamarche-Gagnon Last updated: 2022-11-30. --------------- VERSION CONTROL --------------- Is this a new version of a previously published dataset? YES Previous version (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.7319160) had POC/PC concentrations erroneously labelled as "POC/PC_load". This version correctly reports POC/PC concentrations and loads (see below). ------------------- GENERAL INFORMATION ------------------- Title of Dataset: Particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration in meltwater runoff of Leverett Glacier, Russell Glacier, and Isunnguata Sermia, southwest Greenland (2009-2018) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.7382723 Name: Guillaume Lamarche-Gagnon Institution: UiT The Arctic University of Norway Email: guillaume.lamarche-gagnon@uit.no ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3444-7834 This dataset describes particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate carbon (PC) concentrations of suspended sediments in the proglacial rivers of 3 land-terminating glaciers in the Kangerlussuaq area, Southwest Greenland: Leverett Glacier (LG), Leverett River; Russell Glacier (RG), Akuliarusiarsuup Kuua; and Isunnguata Sermia (IS), Isortoq River. Both the Leverett River and Akuliarusiarsuup Kuua are tributaries of the Qinnguata Kuussua (also known as Watson River). The data have already been part of 3 different publications (Lawson et al. 2014, Kohler et al. 2017, and Vrbická et al. 2022) but are archived here for the first time. POC data was collected for LG during the 2009 and 2010 melt seasons (Lawson et al. 2014) as well as 2015 (Kohler et al. 2017). For the 2018 melt season, only total carbon concentrations of suspended sediments (PC) is archived as opposed to POC (see Vrbická et al. 2022). -------------------- DATA & FILE OVERVIEW -------------------- File List: 00_readme_V2.txt (this file) 01_LG_POC_2009_15_V2.csv 02_IS_RG_LG_PC_2018_V2.csv ----------------- VARIABLES & UNITS ----------------- Variable/Column List: - glacier: name of glacier feeding sampled proglacial river - lat: latitude of sampling location - lon: longitude of sampling location - year: year of sampling - date: date of sampling - time: time of sampling (only for "LG_POC_2009_15_V2.csv") - doy: day of the year (julian day) - POC_percent OR PC_percent: POC (2009-2010 data) or PC (2018 data) concentration in g of carbon per 100 grams of suspended-sediment - POC_mgL or PC_mgL: POC (2009-2010 data) or PC (2018 data) concentration in milligram of carbon per litre; calculated by multiplying the reported POC/PC_percent by the daily mean suspended-sediment concentration (see related datasets above for suspended-sediment metadata) - POC_gS OR PC_gS: POC (2009-2010 data) or PC (2018 data) load in g of carbon per second. The load was calculated by multiplying the reported POC/PC_mgL by the daily mean water discharge (see related datasets above for discharge metadata) - publication: related publication where the data first appeared or was generated -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- Suspended sediment from runoff waters were either filtered onto pre-furnaced (450˚C) glass-microfiber 0.70 µm GF/F Whatman filters (2009 - 2015 samples; Lawson et al. 2014, Kohler et al. 2017) or 0.45 µm nitrocellulose membrane filters (2018 samples; Vrbická et al. 2022). Time of sampling varied for the 2009-2015 seasons; in 2018 most samples were collected around 11:00 for LG and RG and around 15:00 for IS (see Hawkings et al. 2021 for 2018 sampling details). For 2009-2010 samples, POC was calculated as the difference between total sediment carbon (TC) and sediment inorganic carbon (IC). TC and IC were measured on a EuroVector EA1108 elemental analyser (EuroVector, Milan, Italy) and a modified Coulomat 702 analyser (Strohlein Instruments, Kaarst, Germany) (Lawson et al. 2014). For 2015 samples, the %C was measured on a vario MICRO Element Analyzer (Kohler et al. 2017). For 2018 samples, the %C was measured on an Elememtar vario PYRO cube R elemental anlyser (Vrbická et al. 2022). ----------------------------------------- RELATED PUBLICATIONS ----------------------------------------- Vrbická K, Kohler TJ, Falteisek L, Hawkings JR, Vinšová P, Bulínová M, Lamarche-Gagnon G, Hofer S, Kellerman AM, Holt AD, Cameron KA, Schön M, Wadham JL and Stibal M (2022) Catchment characteristics and seasonality control the composition of microbial assemblages exported from three outlet glaciers of the Greenland ice sheet.
