Fog catchers as experiments in the hydrosocial cycle in arid zones of Chile (in Spanish)

  • 1. Institute of Strategic Studies for Human Development (INEDH), ConcepciĆ³n, Bio-Bio, Chile

Since the 1980s experimentation with fog collection devices have taken place in arid areas of northern Chile, in a context of both privatization and precarious institutional arrangements for rural areas. This article examines the implementation of these experimental systems in three rural communities of the Coquimbo Region, to analyse the linkages between experiments and the social production of water scarcity and injustice. Based on a documentary analysis, this work describes the experiments and characterizes the hydro-social territories in which they are inserted, emphasizing both the potential and the ambiguity of these systems as an alternative to the dominant water regime.
