We have some overpopulated cities with horrible infrastructure and seemingly no accommodations for delivery personnel and their vehicles. So in turn, many times we are forced to park illegally for Amazon's sake, which obviously is not right and feels horrible. But honestly, what is to be done? I have the decals on my car that say ""Amazon"" but we are still at the mercy of the traffic police. Our options is to park illegally and try to complete the delivery quickly, or drive around until you find a spot 2 blocks away, and just walk it. I would be fine with walking it, but Amazon completely overloads us on these downtown routes. Usually 40+ packages for a 4.5 hr block. So, traffic can make a 5 min distance turn into a 15 min distance, and the task of finding parking can add another 10 minutes. Then walking to the building would be some more. And then the story of gaining access. Amazon has been around for years, so why is it still so bad? I was pretty jaded because I literally just watched every one get sent home with pay in the block before me, and this was how I was rewarded for being early and first in line for my block. Anyway, decided to just suck it up and I loaded up. First few stops were annoying with the whole not being able to find parking and trying to find apartments (was probably averaging 10 minutes a stop, not counting drive time) and then I got to the last one that I actually took. No information from the customer on how to get in the door, no one would answer the phone, a door dash guy showed up and he and I waited about 10-15 minutes just trying to contact somebody to get in. Finally got in and found the customer and left for my next stop. There was literally no parking for this next one that wasnt paid from what I could tell; they even had a valet service. I decided to skip it and started pulling up the next stop when I saw the next 10 or so were in this same area and just said fuck it. Went back and returned pretty much everything. I was assigned a block yesterday for a downtown area. It included a lot of office buildings and condos with limited or difficult parking, hard to understand instructions, and several problems that took time to solve. I was given 48 packages for a 4.5 hour block that started 40 minutes away from the pickup location. Even though I checked in 15 minutes early, I didn't get everything scanned, loaded, and the cart returned until 5 minutes into my block, so after taking the driving time to the first stop into account, I was expected to spend a little under 5 minutes per package delivery to finish my block on time. My block was supposed to end by 2pm, and all packages were promised to the customers by 3pm. To get them all delivered to the customers by 3pm would give me a little under 6 minutes per package. This includes getting in my car, buckling up, starting the driving directions, driving to the location, finding parking which in almost all instances downtown was very difficult if not impossible and occasionally required me to park either illegally or a block or more away, walk to the location, follow the instructions on how to access the building (which were sometimes very easy, and sometimes not clear at all), and figure out where to leave the package with instructions that were often conflicting (example: Leave package with receptionist. Package must be given to customer or left at customer's door. Call customer if unsure.) Customers often didn't answer the phone, driver support often had long wait times. The reality was that walking my fastest, working my hardest, and trying my very best to get these packages where they needed to go, I averaged 12.5 minutes per package. 48 packages took me TEN HOURS from the time I arrived at the first stop. Over half of my deliveries were marked as late. I'm so frustrated that I don't feel like I can do Amazon deliveries anymore, for fear of getting another impossible downtown block.
