Description
In the present study 80 wheat varieties from Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria and Serbia were tested at NARDI Fundulea, in organic agriculture system, during two seasons 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. Our goal was to identify genetic and phenotypic variation and to select the most suitable wheat varieties for organic agriculture system. We analyzed: yield, spikes number, plant height, thousand kernel weight (TKW) and test weight (TW). The weather conditions of the two seasons were very different climatically: one season was very dry and the other season was rainy, especially during grain filling period. We obtained significant differences for all analyzed traits, between the two seasons. Also, we obtained significant differences between wheat varieties for plant height, TKW and TW, averaged over two seasons. We obtained significant differences for yield between wheat
varieties only in the dry season (2019-2020). The results of this preliminary testing suggest that there is enough variability for important agronomic traits that could be used in a breeding program for organic agriculture.
