Equilibrium constants for acidlbase equilibria of the type
RC6H4NH3+ + C6H3NH2 = C6H3NH3+ + RC6H4NH2
have been determined by an indicator method in a few solvents and the effect of solvent on such equilibria is discussed. It has been shown that specific solute-solvent interactions as examplified by the free energies of transfer of the various species involved in the equilibria must also be considered in addition to the electrostatic effects in understanding such equilibria.
