Dilophotes berezowskii Kasantsev 2000

Description

Dilophotes berezowskii Kasantsev, 2000

Dilophotes berezowskii Kasantsev, 2000: 331.

Diagnosis. Dilophotes berezowskii has male genitalia very similar to that of D. atricollis. These species differ in the pronotal colouration. D. berezowskii is a very widespread species and specimens from different elevations differ in the shade of red body parts, but the colouration of pronotum and elytra is always very similar.

Redescription. Body mediumsized, slender, black, pronotum and elytra red to dark brown, with dense red pubescence. Head with short rostrum, frons densely pubescent. Eyes small, interocular distance 1.64 times maximum eye diameter. Antennae slightly serrate, terminal antennomeres almost parallelsided. Maxillary palpi slender. Pronotum 1.2 times wider than long, frontal margin slightly emarginate in middle, frontal angles inconspicuous, lateral margins very slightly concave, posterior angles moderately projected (Fig. 7). Pronotal disc with sharp longitudinal costa attached to frontal margin and reaching middle of pronotal disc, keel inconspicuous posteriorly. Pronotal disc surface densely pubescent, shiny. Posterior margin of scutellum straight. Elytra slender, flat, slightly widened posteriorly, each elytron with three longitudinal costae, costa 1 very weak, reaching three quarters of elytral length, costa 3 very strong basally. Male genitalia with phallus slender, internal sac complex, sclerotized (Fig. 9).

Measurements. BL 8.0 mm, WH 1.76 mm, PL 1.15 mm, PW 1.43 mm, Ediam 0.34 mm, Edist 0.56 mm.

Material examined. 4 males, 2 females, " China, Abazhou, Nanping, Jiuzhaigou, 2000 m, 33.15°N, 104.15°E, 8.13. 6. 1990 ", 3 males, " China, Shaanxi, Quinling Shan, 35 km S of Baoji, 21.23. 6. 1998 "; 2 males, "Yunnan, Habashan mts., SE slope, 27.20°N, 100.11°E, 20003800 m, 10.13. 7. 1992 "; 2 males, " China, W Hubei prov., Dashennongjia Nat. Res., Muyu, E slope, 2000 m, 12.16. 6. 1997 "; 1 male, " China, Shaanxi prov., Qing Ling Shan mts., road Baoji, Taibai vill., 21.26. 6. 1998 "; 1 male, " China, Yunnan prov., Jinsha riv., Daju, 27.18°N, 100.13°E, 15.17. 7. 1990 "; 1 male, " China, N Yunnan, Yulongshan mts., E slope, 3200 m, 27.13°N, 100.16°E, 14. 7. 1990 "; 1 male, " China, Yunnan, Hengduan mts., 28.06°N, 98.54°E, 5.8. 7. 1996 "; 1 male, "Yunnan, Yulongshan, 3300 m, 27.07°N, 100.14°E, 9. 7. 1996 "; 1 male, " China, NW Sichuan, 30 km NW Muli, Bowa, mixed forest, 3500 m, 28.07°N, 101.05°E, 24. 7. 1995 " (LMBC).

Distribution. berezowskii is a widely distributed species in China (Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei, Yunnan).

Remark. There exists the considerable variability in the colouration of pronotum and elytra. Specimens from lower elevations in Sichuan (about 2000 m a. s. l.) are reddish. Specimens from higher elevations in Yunnan, humid mountains in Shaanxi Province, and the Shennongjia mountains are dark red.

Kasantsev (2000) described this species according to two specimens from one locality, therefore he did not mentioned any variability and was able to distingiush this species from D. diversipennis Pic, 1912.
