Description
Netelia (Bessobates) longipad n. sp.
(Figs 53–57, 63–65)
♂. Head (Figs 53, 54) 1.7–1.8 times as wide as long; vertex in dorsal view evenly rounded; occiput and interocellar area impunctate and polished; vertex and gena weakly and finely punctate; geno-orbital index 2.0–2.2; frons impunctate and finely coriaceous, with a weak median longitudinal groove; face about 1.4 times as wide as long, rather more strongly punctate than vertex; clypeus 2.1–2.3 times as wide as long, rather more sparsely punctate than face, with apical margin truncate and slightly concave medially; antenna with 50–57 flagellomeres, 1st flagellomere 1.5–1.6 times as long as 2nd, 2nd 2.5–2.6 times as long as wide.
Mesosoma (Fig. 55): mesoscutum 1.2–1.3 times as long as wide; scutellum 1.4–1.6 times as long as distance between lateral carinae at its base, with lateral carina fading out before basal 1/3 of scutellum; propodeum transstriate on about basal 0.7, with sublateral crest present and weakly carinate.
Fore tibial spur 0.4–0.5 times as long as 1st tarsomere, which is 8.5–9.8 times as long as wide; fore tarsal claw with 21–26 pectines; hind tarsal claw with 16–20 pectines.
Fore wing (Fig. 56) with areolet pointed or petiolate above; cu-a opposite Rs&M, almost straight, inclivous; hind wing (Fig. 57) with 7–11 distal hamuli; nervellar index 0.7–0.9.
Metasoma with 1st tergum 2.4–2.8 times as long as apical width and 1.4–1.5 times as long as 2nd; subgenital plate (Fig. 63) short with apical margin weakly convex; paramere (Fig. 64) with subapical portions of dorsal and ventral margins slightly emarginate; hairs on lamina volsellaris small; digitus truncate with corners rounded and ventro-apical corner without teeth; membrane of median surface without papillae; pad long, extending anteriorly and reaching apical 2/3 of paramere; subapical sclerotized plate not produced to form an overhang; penis valve (Fig. 65) slightly broadened toward apex and slightly curved ventrally; basal apodeme of aedeagus strongly curved dorsally.
Head yellow; occiput and interocellar area light brown; antenna reddish-brown. Mesosoma yellow; mesoscutum, scutellum, postscutellum, irregular markings on mesopleuron and mesosternum light brown. Fore and middle legs brownish-yellow; hind leg light brown except tarsus whitish-yellow. Wings hyaline; basal 2/3 tinged with yellow and distal 1/3 tinged with gray; vein C and pterostigma of fore wing brownish-yellow, other veins blackish-brown. Metasoma light brown.
Length of fore wing: 13.2–17.0 mm.
♀. Unknown.
Holotype: ♂, Odaigahara, Nara Pref., 13–14. vii. 1983 (S. Ito), NIAES.
Paratypes: [Honshu] Nara Pref.: 3♂ (13–14. vii. 1983, S. Ito) & 1♂ (25. vi. 1984, K. Konishi at light), Odaigahara, NIAES. Hyogo Pref.: 1♂, Kobe, 26. v. 1959 (T. Naito), MNHA. [Shikoku] Kochi Pref.: 22♂, Teragawa, Hongawa, 1. vii. 1995 (K. Konishi, at light), NIAES. [Kyushu] Oita Pref.: 1♂, Mt. Kurodake, Mts. Kuju, 8. vi. 1985 (K. Konishi, at light), NIAES.
Distribution. Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu).
Etymology. The specific name is based on the long pad of the paramere.
Remarks. This new species can easily be distinguished from other species of Bessobates by the strongly produced and elongate pad. This species can not be assigned to any species group, because of the following combination of characters: vertex evenly rounded in dorsal view; lateral scutellar carina fading out before middle of scutellum; sublateral crest of propodeum present; digitus truncate, without teeth on ventro-apical corner; pad membranous; penis valve moderately broad.
