Oryssomus variabilis Korschefsky, 1934: 35 –36 (original description); Blackwelder, 1945: 446 (check list). Neoryssomus variabilis: Hofmann, 1972: 83 –84 (new combination; description; morphological details and male genitalia figured).

Type material: Deutsches Entomologisches Institut, Berlin-Dahlen,“Prov. Concepcion, Chile, August 1903, P. Herbst leg.”.

Geographical distribution: Chile: Aconcagua to Concepcion (Hofmann 1972).

Remarks. Hofmann (1972), recognized some shared characteristics of these two species, Oryssomus variabilis and Cranoryssus germainii, mainly in the shape of the body very flattened, downward pronotum and posterior angles strongly rounded, placing them in a new genus, Neoryssomus. It differs from Oryssomus by having 11 antennomeres and from Gordonoryssomus by the flattened body.
