OTHER REPORTED NAMES: Malmgrenia castanea McIntosh, 1876; Harmothoe castanea (McIntosh, 1876). REMARKS: Barnich & Fiege (2003) reported the distribution of M. castanea for the Western Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic, but noticed that all the other records needed to be checked, due to its similarity with M. lunulata (Delle Chiaje, 1830) and M. andreapolis (McIntosh, 1874).

REMARKS: Since M. lunulata has been often confused with other related species (M. darbouxi Pettibone 1993, M. andreapolis (McIntosh, 1874) and M. castanea (McIntosh, 1976)) all the literature records from the Mediterranean Sea and Northeastern Atlantic are doubtful and need to be checked (Barnich & Fiege 2001).
