®? Harmothoe glabra (Malmgren, 1865)

DISTRIBUTION: NA.

NEW RECORDS: BM 52, BM 53, BM 54.

REMARKS: These are the first records from the Adriatic Sea. However, the identification is uncertain and in need of verification. According to Chambers & Muir (1997) H. glabra occurs in the North East Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea, while Barnich & Fiege (2003) consider the presence of this species in the Mediterranean as uncertain. Harmothoe glabra has been often confused or synonymized with H. longisetis (Grube, 1863), but according to Barnich & Fiege (2000) the two species should be considered as distinct. Due to the confusion between the two taxa, all literature records of these species in the Mediterranean Sea and North-Eastern Atlantic are doubtful and need to be confirmed (Barnich & Fiege 2000, 2003).

OTHER REPORTED NAMES: Evarnella impar Johnston, 1839; Harmothoe reticulata (Claparède, 1870); Polynoe reticulata Claparède, 1870.

REMARKS: Due to the confusion of H. impar with other similar taxa (H. aspera (Hansen, 1879), H. bellani Barnich & Fiege 2000, H. extenuata (Grube 1840), H. fragilis Moore, 1910, H. gilchristi Day, 1960, H. goreensis Augener, 1918 and H. pagenstecheri Michaelsen, 1896), the previous records of these species in the Mediterranean and North East Atlantic are doubtful and need to be confirmed (Barnich & Fiege 2003). The previous records of H. reticulata (Claparède, 1870) in the Adriatic should be referred to H. impar.
