CURRENT STATUS: Junior synonym of Orfelia Costa, 1857. New Synonymy.

FAMILY: KEROPLATIDAE.

REMARKS: Zelmira was originally proposed by Meigen (1800: 16) without included species and later made unavailable by the suppression of the entire work for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of the I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]). Hendel (1908: 48) was the first after Meigen (1800) to give characters to differentiate the taxon (reproducing Meigen’s characters) and to treat Zelmira as valid, which makes the name available from that work with Meigen as author. Hendel (1908) did not include any species. Coquillett (1910a: 621) was the first to include a species: Platyura fasciata Meigen, 1803, which is the type species by subsequent designation. Platyura fasciata Meigen, 1803 is currently treated in Orfelia Costa, 1857 [teste Evenhuis (2006: 89)], which makes Zelmira Meigen in Hendel, 1908 a junior synonym of Orfelia Costa, 1857, n. syn. When Coquillett (1910a: 617) selected Platyura fasciata Meigen, 1803 as type species for Zelmira, that species was treated in Platyura Meigen, 1803. Platyura fasciata Meigen, 1803 has subsequently been found to be a species of Orfelia Costa, 1857, where we treat it here.
