Pygoda thoracica (Dallas, 1851) , Comb.

Description

Pygoda thoracica (Dallas, 1851) Comb. Nov.

(Figures 9A–D, 13E–F, 15)

Edessa thoracica Dallas, 1851: 331; Dohrn, 1859: 20; Walker, 1868: 426; Stål, 1872: 60; Lethierry & Severin, 1893: 195; Kirkaldy, 1909: 165

Lectotype male. Colombia, 47/25 (BMNH). Examined. Here designated.

Material examined. ECUADOR. ♀ 71 (1871?) E. de Ville. M. R. Belg. (IRSNB); ♂ no data (UFRG).

Measurements. Total length 18.2–18.4; total width 9.9–10; head length 1.7–17.1; head width 3.2–3.3; length of antennal articles I: 0.1; II: 1.6; III: 1.4; pronotum length 3.5–3.6; pronotum width 10.5–10.7; scutellum length 8.7–8.8; scutellum width 6.0–6.1.

Diagnosis. Species medium (18—19mm) and dorsally green. Pronotum with black punctures not on black spots, punctuation sparser than punctuation of P. polyta or P. irrorata. Scutellum with fine and sparse black punctures. Corium with all veins yellow. Connexivum completely green without spots or callous yellow (Fig. 13E); segment VII with basal half green and distal half black. Body ventrally mostly pale yellow with black lines on the edges of the sternites and pseudosutures. Evaporatorium brown. Lateral margin of the abdomen with a green stripe corresponding to ventral part of connexivum. Antennae orange to red. Legs yellow.

Head. Mandibular plates with few dark punctures and not stained. Tylus with dark margin (Fig. 13E). ventral surface greenish yellow. First rostral segment not surpassing bucculae in lateral view.

Thorax. Pronotum sparsely punctured, punctures coarse (Fig. 13E); cicatrices, delimiting furrows and surrounding calloused stripes concolorous with pronotum (Fig. 13E); anterior delimiting furrow punctured. Anterolateral margin pale yellow; line of black coarse punctures short, not exceeding 1/3 of the margin. Anterolateral punctured line short, reaching 1/3 of the anterolateral margin; punctures dark and coarse. Scutellum with fine black punctures sparser on anterior half than on posterior part, anterior punctures slightly bigger than posterior concolorous punctures. Corium with few yellow veins (Fig 13E). Propleura with dark line alongside not punctured area; lateral margin green. Evaporatorium rugose, light brown with one or two dark stripes. Peritreme short, not reaching 1/3 of the distance between ostiole of the scent gland and margin of the body. Metasternal process greenish yellow with arms broad and receiving fourth rostral segment (Fig. 13F).

Abdomen. Connexivum with excavations concolorous, densely punctured only on inner margin; base of lateral spines green. Lateral part of segment VII, corresponding to ventral side of connexivum, greenish yellow with margin black; partially covered by green lateral stripe. Spiracles on concolorous area. Small black rounded spot close to spiracle on each segment (Fig 13F).

Male (Fig. 9A–C). Pygophore with posterolateral angles projected and not flattened, except by a small sulcus (Fig. 9A). Superior process of genital cup elliptical, narrow and short. Paramere with both posterior processes large, laterally directed and as big as anterior process; distal process of posterior margin sinuous; basal process short and curved laterally (Fig. 9B). Proctiger mostly dark brown, short, not reaching level of posterolateral angles (Fig. 9B); lateral excavation not forming a crest dorsally; dorsal part of posterior face slightly tumid. Ventral rim medially greenish yellow and brown; expansions barely developed and not tumid (Fig. 9C). Ventral surface mostly greenish yellow, base brown, few suffused brown spots; punctures fine and concolorous.

Female (Fig. 9D). Gonocoxites 8 with lateral margin almost rounded and posterior margin slightly straight; punctures concentrated on convex part; sutural border divergent; carina from gonapophysis 8 visible. Gonocoxites 9 large, distal part slightly rounded; Laterotergites 8 with distal spine black almost same level the segment VII. Laterotergites 9 acute, large with small part of the base excavated; same level of laterotergites 8.

Comments. Dallas described Edessa thoracica based in a male, but not mentioned additional material, so the single specimen present in the collection of BMNH is considered the Lectotype. The color pattern described here agrees with Dallas’ description, but probably is somewhat faded in both specimens. Genitalia of both sexes were not dissected, but pygophore is dislocated and phallus partially visible showing the constriction and distal part developed with a small conical projection.

Distribution (Fig. 15). ECUADOR.
