SDR moonbounce signals at 433.8MHz

Description

This dataset contains recordings of a moon-bounce experiment performed on 2021-10-05 with the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope (operating under call sign PI9CAM). UHF signals were transmitted with the telescope, and their Moon echo was received about 2.5 seconds later.

Most signals were transmitted and received with an Ettus USRP B210. Parallel to the USRP, a board based on a Semtech LR1110 LoRa chip was used to receive both the uplink and downlink signal. Some of the signals were even transmitted using this board. For the LoRa signals, the board recorded the delay between transmit and receive and deduced the distance to the Lunar surface in real time. The output of the board is in lora_log_horizontal.txt and lora_log_vertical.txt. Times in these file are local time (CEST).

The data was converted to SigMF format. The metadata contains information on the device used to transmit and receive the signals, and about the modulation used. Signals were transmitted with a 210kHz offset.

The absolute timestamps are not very well calibrated: the computer doing the recording was not synchronized. The timestamp in the filename represents the creation time of the file, the time in the metadata approximates the time of the first sample (we guessed the delay based on later experiments).

The LoRa moon bounce was a distance record for LoRa. We made a press release for this. The basis for the distance mentioned in the press release was the actual Lunar distance at the time of the Moon bounce in camras-rx-2021_10_05_14_38_49.sigmf-data.
