Pacific Grove, northern California to Bahía San Quintin, northern Baja California (Follett and Anderson 1990). Benthic; depth: 1–29 m (4–95 ft) (min.: Follett and Anderson 1990; max.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California). The original genus name was Esselenia, but this name is not available for fishes because it was already given to a grasshopper, Anderson (2003) changed the name to Esselenichthys.
