Halichoeres californicus (Günther, 1861).

Señorita. To 27.5 cm (10.8 in) TL (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California). Salt Point, northern California (Eschmeyer and Herald 1983) to Bahía Magdalena, southern Baja California (De La Cruz-Agüero et al. 1994); also reported, although without attribution, from Gulf of California (Galván-Magaña et al. 2000). Larvae taken south of Bahía Magdalena at about 23°30’N (Funes-Rodríguez et al. 1998). Depth: intertidal to 101 m (331 ft) (min.: M.L., unpubl. data; max.: John Engel, pers. comm. to M.L.). Genetic studies (Baliga and Law 2016, Wainwright et al. 2018) demonstrate that this species is congeneric with Halichoeres semicinctus and we follow Fricke et al. (2020) in removing it from the genus Oxyjulis.
