Discrete Optimisation and Modular Construction Design

  • 1. InnoRenew CoE / University of Primorska, Slovenia

Description

The design of buildings is a complex multi-stage process, where the initial plans of the structural frame are first transformed into a preliminary design, which is then specified further by detailing. In many cases, these designs are created by choosing structural elements from an existing pool of components with different characteristics and pre-specified standards. As most elements in the structural frame can have multiple viable candidates, the choice can ultimately depend on the design goals and objectives of the experts. These objectives, which can range from costs to environmental impact, can often be conflicting, and finding a design that is the best fit for all requirements can be challenging. This presentation shows how discrete optimization methods can help experts in developing a preliminary design of the structure based on the initial plans. A tabu search method is presented as an example for the application of heuristic algorithms as part of a decision support framework for structural design.
