Species composition

Cleonardopsis contains 1 species: C. carinata K.H. Barnard, 1916.

Remarks

K.H. Barnard (1916) described Cleonardopsis carinata from the Cape Peninsula area of South Africa. Pirlot (1934) described Amathillopleustes alticoxa from off the Mollucas in eastern Indonesia. K.H. Barnard (1916) illustrated only the pleosome and coxae 5 and 6, but particularly coxae 5 and 6 look quite different from the detailed illustrations of Pirlot (1934). Stephensen (1944) reported unillustrated specimens of Cleonardopsis carinata from off the coast of eastern Greenland which he then synonymised with Amathillopleustes alticoxa. This is risky business based on unsubstantiated evidence. Although the genera may be the same it is difficult to accept the species synonymy and even more difficult to accept that the material reported by Stephensen (1944) from eastern Greenland is synonymous with either of these species.
