Circumglobal; western Pacific Ocean north to southern Japan (Nakabo in Nakabo 2002); San Pedro, southern California to central Chile (Fitch and Lavenberg 1968), including lowermost Gulf of California (Robertson and Allen 2015), and Islas Galápagos (Grove and Lavenberg 1997). Oceanic epipelagic and mesopelagic; depth: surface to 1,000 m (3,280 ft) (Robertson and Allen 2008).
