Marine, brackish, and nearly fresh waters (Allen and Robertson 1994, Romero-Berny 2018); depth: 0.3–107 m (1–351 ft) (min.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California; max.: Amezcua Linares 1996). Previously referred to as Gerres cinereus (Walbaum, 1792), now limited to the western Atlantic (Fricke et al. 2020).
