Shallow coastal waters and in estuaries (Watson et al. in Moser 1996); depth: surface (nightlight; Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California), <1 m to 50 m (3–164 ft) (min.: Arceo-Carranza and Chiappa-Carrara 2015; max.: Amezcua Linares 1996); also reported from fresh water (Greenfield and Thomerson 1997).
