Description

The icing is an hazard which importance for the aerospace industry is growing in the
last few years. Developing sensors that can detect the existence of Supercooled Large Droplets
(SLD) conditions is one of the most important aims in order to minimize the icing hazards. In the
present paper a study of the Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors performance as an Flight Icing Detection
System that predicts the conditions of an icing cloud is done. The test matrix has been performed
in the INTA Icing Wind Tunnel with several conditions. An optic fiber has been integrated in the
lower and upper surface of an airfoil for measuring the temperature allover the chord. The results
have been compared with a Messinger heat and mass balance model and the results are used for
predicting the LiquidWater Content and Ice Accretion Rate. Finally, the results are evaluated and a
sensor assessment is made. A good correlation has been observed between theoretical calculations
and test results obtained in the IWT.
