FIGURE 1. Locality diagram. Regional setting of the East Scotia Ridge back-arc basin, some 400–500 kilometres southeast of South Georgia in the Southern Ocean. Vent-field segments E2 and E9 of the ESR (shown by stars) are roughly positioned along a longitudinal line immediately to west of the South Sandwich Islands.
