Description

Carphontes paradoxus Monné & Monné sp. nov.

(Fig. 2)

Description. Male. Integument reddish-brown. Body with predominance of brownish pubescence. Grayishwhite pubescence covers a narrow longitudinal fascia on each side of the middle of the pronotum, prolonged outwards parallel to the anterior margin; a narrow longitudinal fascia in the middle of the scutellum; and a fascia covering the apical sutural third of the elytra. Antennae and legs with sparse brownish pubescence. Ventral surface covered with grayish-brown pubescence. Antennae exceeding elytral apices at the middle of segment 7.

Prothorax with lateral tubercles acute; pronotum with a row of fine punctures on posterior margin. Elytra with sides subparallel, decreasing to apex; finely and moderately densely punctate on entire surface; apices rounded. Fifth urosternite pointed at apex; fifth urosternite with apex semicircularly emarginated.

Female. Antennae exceeding elytral apices at apex of segment 8. Fifth urotergite rounded at the posterior margin; fifth urosternite rounded, feebly notched in middle of apex.

Measurements (mm) male/female. Total length, 5.7–6.0/5.3–6.4; prothorax length, 1.0–1.1/1.0–1.1; prothorax width, 2.0–2.0/2.0–2.2; elytral length, 4.2–4.4/4.2–4.5; humeral width, 2.3–2.4/2.3–2.4.

Type material. Holotype, male. Ve n e z u e l a, Tachira: Carretera Bramón-Delicias (1860 m), 9-11.XII.1980, J. Clavijo, A. Chacón & J. M. Ayala leg. (FAUV). Paratypes, Ven e z u el a, Aragua: Maracay (Rancho Grande, 1100 m), 1 female, 30.IV.1954, F. Fernández Y. leg. (FAUV); 1 female, 13.XII.1965, F. Fernández Y. leg.; 1 female, 5.VIII.1968, J. Maldonado C. leg. (USNM); 1 female, 21.XI.1975, J. Salcedo leg. (MNRJ); 1 female, 24.X.1976, J. L. Garcia leg. (FAUV); 1 male, 7.IV.1978, A. Chacón &. R. A. Clavijo leg. (MNRJ); 1 female, 9.V.1978, A. Chacón leg. (FAUV).

Remarks. Carphontes paradoxus sp. nov. is very similar in general aspect and coloration to C. posticalis, but the grayish-white pattern on the pronotum consists of a narrow longitudinal sinuous fascia on each side of the middle, rather than the four comma-like spots near the anterior margin and two on the posterior margin, in C. posticalis. Also, the fascia that covers the apical third of the sutural area is narrow in C. paradoxus, and broader and extended farther forward in C. posticalis.
