Type material

Type series could not be traced. Fabricius (1775) stated the specimens he studied for the description of the species came from the Joseph Banks Collection, which is currently housed in the BMNH (Zimsen 1964). Nevertheless, according to Vaurie (1962), due to inconsistencies with the original description the specimen currently resting under the ‘ suberosus ’ label in the Banks collection certainly does not correspond to the species named by Fabricius (1775) as Trox suberosus. The whereabouts of the actual type series was unknown to Vaurie (1962) and all subsequent authors, including us. Even so, we do not consider it necessary to designate a neotype since Omorgus suberosus is a welldefined species and can be readily recognised from the literature (e.g. Vaurie, 1962; Scholtz 1990; Huchet and Costa-Silva 2018). Type locality: BRAZIL, Rio de Janeiro: off the coast of Rio de Janeiro city, Ilha Rasa (originally cited as ‘Brasilia’; see Papavero (1971) for more details).

Diagnosis

Omorgus suberosus resembles O. triestinae. It can be distinguished from the latter by the sculpture of the even numbered elytral costae. In O. suberosus the even numbered costae are barely raised, whereas O. triestinae has the even numbered costae distinctly raised. The male genitalia of the two species are distinctive (Figures 6b and 7c). For a more detailed treatment of the species see Pittino (1987) and Huchet and Costa-Silva (2018).

Geographic distribution

This ubiquitous New World species is now established in Australia, parts of Europe and northern Africa. It has also been recorded from Fiji, New Caledonia, the Cape Verde Islands and the Canary Islands (Huchet and Costa-Silva 2018). In Brazil, this species has been so far recorded in all biomes and states, except for AP, AL and SE (Figure 11). The absence of actual records notwithstanding, the authors agree that the distribution of the species should contemplate these states.According to Huchet and Costa-Silva (2018) and Hielkema and Hielkema (2019), this species is present in all countries of South America, with exception of Chile (see Diéguez 2008).
