Description

The article summarizes the results of three-year testing of different wheat cultivars in conventional and organic production practice at Jablje (central Slovenia). Yield performance and basic quality parameters of individual cultivars are presented and the economic efficiency of cultivars grown conventionally or organically is calculated and presented. Our results show that the price of the organically grown wheat, offered by the milling industry in the years 2016-2019 was too small to compensate for the average of 50% of yield reduction in organic production compared to yields in conventional production. Consequently, organic production resulted in lower economic efficiency compared to the conventional production of wheat. Based on our findings, the milling industry should increase the prices of organic wheat by an average of at least 35-40% in Slovenia to stimulate the contracted organic wheat production. On the contrary, local self-marketing of organic grains by the farmers shows better economic efficiency and is thus the preferred choice of Slovenian organic farmers.
