Xyphinus sabal Kranz-Baltensperger 2014, sp. nov.

Description

Xyphinus sabal sp. nov.

(Figs 37–38; map 3)

Type material. Holotype. male (PBI _ OON 00016210), MALAYSIA: Sarawak, SE de Serian, Sabal (= Forest Research Station), battage, 190 m; 10.XII.1987, leg. C. Lienhard, MHNG.

Etymology. The specific name is a noun in apposition and refers to the locality, where this species was collected.

Diagnosis. X. sabal sp. nov. can be separated from other congeners by the reticulation of the carapace surface (Fig. 37A, C, E) and the presence of three strong setae on the prolateral surface of the palpal cymbium (Fig. 38A, C, E, arrow).

Description. Male. Total length 1.91 mm. Carapace: Orange-brown, broadly oval in dorsal view, strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with angular posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, anterolateral corners with slightly sclerotized triangular projections, posterolateral surface without spikes (Fig. 37A, C, E), surface of pars cephalica and sides finely reticulate, fovea present. Lateral margin with tiny denticles. Clypeus: Sinuous in frontal view, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more (Fig. 37D). Eyes: PME largest, ALE circular, PME and PLE oval. Posterior eye row recurved from above, procurved from front. ALE separated by their radius to diameter, ALE and PLE separated by less than ALE radius, PLE and PME separated by less than PME radius, PME touching (Fig. 37A, D, E). Sternum: Longer than wide, sickle-shaped structures not touching. Radial furrows opposite coxae III absent. Surface finely reticulate (Fig. 37B). Mouthparts: Chelicerae slightly divergent, anterior face with swelling. Labium rectangular, indented at middle, with 3–5 setae on anterior margin. Abdomen: Book-lung covers elliptical. Scuto-pedicel region with few sharply pointed denticles. Dorsal scutum orange brown, middle surface and sides punctate, anterior half without projecting denticles. Dorsal scutum embedding narrow tip of abdomen (Fig. 37C). Epigastric scutum not protruding. Postepigastric scutum with short posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. Posterior spiracles connected by groove. Legs: Metatarsi of legs III and IV with harpoon-like hairs. Tibia with three, metatarsi with one trichobothria each. Genitalia: Sperm pore small, situated at level of anterior spiracles. Trochanter normal size, unmodified. Femur one to two times as long as trochanter, attaching to patella basally; patella about as long as femur; tibia two times as long as patella, with three trichobothria, cymbium pale yellow, ovoid in dorsal view, fused with bulb, but with clearly defined seam between, with three long, strong setae prolaterally (Fig. 38A, C); bulb pale orange, 1 to 1.5 times as long as cymbium, with rather short, lobe-like apophysis ventrally and small membranous outgrowth dorsally (Fig. 38).

Female unknown.
