This file explains all of the variables in each of the datasets that accompany: Kin grouping is insufficient to explain the inclusive fitness gains of conspecific brood parasitism in the common eider Samuel D. Hervey, Tanner J. Stechmann, Andrew F. Barnas, Robert F. Rockwell, Susan N. Ellis-Felege, Brian J. Darby Hervey2019AlleleNames.txt >>FastA-formated file of allele names (as in "Hervey2019EiderGenotypes.csv") and their sequences. Allele names include the locus, length, and variant. For example, allele "Sfi01_120_A" is from locus "Sfi01", has length 120 nt, and is variant "A" of all alleles length 120 for that locus. Hervey2019EiderGenotypes.csv >>comma-delimited file with genotypes for each of the eider nest bowl samples collected in 2016 and 2017. SampleID = Identifier of nest bowl and sample NestID = identification number of the nest bowl (NOTE: Identical IDs from two separate years do NOT indicate the same nest) Sample = subsample number from nest bowl (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ...) Year = sampling year (2016, 2017) Tissue = tissue type used (F=Feather (maternal DNA), M=Membrane (offspring DNA)) Sfi01, Sfi03, Sfi09, Smo01, Smo04, Smo06, Smo07, Smo08, Smo09, Smo12 = genotypes for respective microstaellite loci (names are from "Hervey2019AlleleNames.txt" and represent their length (number) and sequence variant (A, B, C, D, ...) NOTE: Empty cells (".") represent missing genotypes Hervey2019NestData.csv >>comma-delimited file with data for each nest. NestID = identification number of the nest bowl (NOTE: Identical IDs from two separate years do NOT indicate the same nest) Year = sampling year (2016, 2017) StudyArea = colony location (MAI=Mast River, WAO=WaWao Creek) Latitude = degrees North Longitude = degrees West Habitat = Nature of vegetation surrounding nest (Birch, Willow, Short Grass, Elymus) DistanceWater = Distance of nest to water (m) VegetationHeight = Height of surrounding vegetation (m) NearestNeighbor = Distance to nearest recorded nest (m) Density = density of surrounding recorded nests (nests per km^2) FatingDate = date on which the nest was fated as failed or successful ClutchSize = Number of eggs in nest Hatchability = proportion of eggs that hatched Hatchlings = number of hatchlings (=ClutchSize*Hatchability) Success = nest success, as determined by at least one sucessful hatchling (1 = at least one successful hatchling, 0 = no successfull hatchlings) TotalMembranes = total number of membranes recovered from nest bowl Parasitized = whether or not the nest was parasitized, based on microsatellite genotyping of membranes (1=parasitized, 0=not parasitized) NumParasites = number of parasitic eggs in nest. NOTE: Empty cells (".") represent missing, or invalid, data (e.g. "." in "Parasitized" indicates that genetic data was missing or insufficient to determin if the nest was parasitized).
