Notes for data from Berson et al 2019: "Natural and sexual selection on cuticular hydrocarbons: a quantitative genetic analysis". #### File: Data_for_Berson_et_al_2019_Proc_B.csv #### This file contains the data used in the preliminary and quantitative genetic analyses. The data are presented as follows: ID: Each row represents the data from one individual (each with a unique ID). Father: the ID of each individual's Father. Mother: the ID of each individual's Mother Courtship_time: time (in minutes) from the commencement of courtship until a male was successfully mounted by a female. Individuals not mounted within the period of observations were assigned the maximum time of 5 minutes. Used with "Mated" in the preliminary survival analyses. Mated: Binary trait showing whether an invididual was successfully mounted within 5 minutes (1) or not (0). Desiccation_time: time (in hours) until death during the desiccation assay. Individuals still alive at the end of the observation period were assigned a time of 36 hours. Used with "Died" in the preliminary survival analyses. Died: Binary trait showing whether an individual died (1) or was still alive at the end of the desiccation trial (0). Attractiveness: Binary trait showing whether an individual was successfully mounted by a female two minutes from the onset of courtship (1 = mounted, 0 = not mounted). Two minutes was selected as a preliminary survival analysis revealed that 50 % of males were successfully mounted by two minutes. Corresponds to "Attractiveness" in the manuscript. Desiccation_resistance: Binary trait showing whether an individual died before 28 hours (0) or was still alive at 28 hours (1) after the start of the desiccation trial. 28 hours was selected as a preliminary survival analysis revealed that 50 % of males died between 27 and 28 hours. Corresponds to "Desiccation resistance" in the manuscript. CHC1 - CHC7: CHC data from individuals that had not undergone a mating or desiccation trial. CHCs are presented in retention time order and correspond to 4-MeC30, C31:1, C31:2, 4-MeC33, C33:1, C33:2 and C33:2 in the manuscript. This data was used in the quantitative genetic analyses. CHC1.AD - CHC7.AD: CHC data from individuals that had attractiveness and desiccation resistance data. This data was used in the multiple regression analyses. AttBeta: Corresponds to Att-CHCBeta in the manuscript. DesBeta: Corresponds to Des-CHCBeta in the manuscript. #### File: Pedigree_for_Berson_et_al_2019_Proc_B #### This file contains the pedigree information used for the quantitative genetic analyses. ID: Each row represents one individual, including both offspring and parents (each with a unique ID). Father: the ID of each individual's Father. Mother: the ID of each individual's Mother.
