Distribution. Western Atlantic— USA (North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Texas), Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, Belize, Panama, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Aruba, Barbados, Curacao, Bonaire, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil (Trindade, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina); Eastern Pacific— El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Ecuador (Haig 1956, 1960; Ramos-Porto et al. 1978; Coelho-Santos & Coelho 1994; Werding et al. 2003; Hiller et al. 2004, 2006; Rodríguez et al. 2005; Coelho et al. 2007; Ferreira & Melo 2016).

Remarks. This species is found under rocks, associated with sponges, corals and anemones on littoral, among roots of mangroves, conglomerates of Mytilus Linnaeus, 1758, clusters of polychaets and in the interstices of Porites Link, 1807 (Werding 1982; Veloso & Melo 1993), associated to the bryozoan S. errata (CCDB 5300), in benches of shells in tide pools and intertidal regions, on calcareous algae bottoms, occasionally on sand, down to depths of 54 m (Ramos-Porto et al. 1978; Williams 1984). Most probably this is a species complex with different entities that should be studied in details. Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): CCDB 2110—16S (MF490162), COI (MF490062) (Mantelatto et al. 2018).
