Distribution. Western Atlantic— Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, Argentina (Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987; Rieger 1998; Melo 1999; Mantelatto et al. 2004; Fransozo et al. 2011; Meireles et al. 2012).

Remarks. Despite previous records of L. loxochelis, which state that Bahia is the northern limit, there is no evidence of specimens collected on the coast of Bahia, neither available in any collection nor reported in recent literature. In the original description by Moreira (1901), the collection site (“ Bahia ”) of the type specimen is possibly a mistake (Mantelatto et al. 2004), and the northern limit of the species distribution is Rio de Janeiro. There are some other species reported by Moreira (1901) collected in “ Bahia do Rio de Janeiro ”, which is a bay in the Rio de Janeiro, so we can conclude that the location reported for the type specimen might be the result of an error during the text preparation, confounding the words “ Bahia ” and bay. We have previously studied the type material (MNRJ 6468), but unfortunately this jar was lost in the recent (Sept 2018) fire incident that destroyed part of the museum collection (I.A. Cardoso, curator of Crustacea, personal communication to FLM, Nov 2020). Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): CCDB 765—16S (DQ369939), CCDB 3437—COI (MF490051) (Mantelatto et al. 2006, 2018).
