Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Florida, Gulf of Mexico), Antilles, and Brazil (Amapá, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul). Mid Atlantic—Ascencion Island. Eastern Atlantic— Africa (Senegal to Congo) (Milne-Edwards & Bouvier 1923; Rathbun 1937; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Powers 1977; Manning & Holthuis 1981; Williams 1984; Abele & Kim 1986; Melo et al. 1989, 1998; Manning & Chace 1990; Melo & Campos Jr. 1994; Melo 1996, 2008; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo mentioned Cananéia (Ilha do Bom Abrigo) and Santos (Baia de Santos and Laje de Santos) with the material deposited in the MZUSP collection (10895, 9422 and 4227, respectively) (Melo & Campos Jr. 1994); some samples include Guarujá where specimens might have been unloaded at fishing harbours (Severino-Rodrigues et al. 2007).
