Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Colombia, Aruba, Curaçao, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela to Brazil (Amapá, Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina) (Rathbun 1918; Chace & Hobbs 1969; Crane 1975; Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1995; Melo 1996; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Bezerra 2012; Sousa et al. 2015; Masunari et al. 2020).
Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Cananéia (Gerlach 1958), Ubatuba, and Cubatão (Bezerra 2012). The species is morphologically close to its congeners M. burgersi and M. mordax (Masunari et al. 2020).
