Description

Allium sphaerocephalon Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 297. 1753.

"Habitat in Italia, Sibiria, Helvetia." RCN: 2358.

Lectotype (Stearn & Özhatay in Ann. Mus. Goulandris 3: 46. 1977): [icon] " Allium seu Moly montanum V" in Clusius, Rar. Pl. Hist. 1: 195. 1601.

Current name: Allium sphaerocephalon L. subsp. sphaerocephalon (Liliaceae / Alliaceae).

Note: Although de Wilde-Duyfjes (in Taxon 22: 84. 1973) treated a Micheli collection (FI) as the lectotype, this collection was not studied by Linnaeus and is not original material for the name. Consequently, Stearn & Özhatay’s subsequent choice of a Clusius plate as type is accepted here.
