Phaca alpina Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 755. 1753.

"Habitat in Lapponia, Sibiria." RCN: 5570.

Lectotype (Greuter in Candollea 23: 265. 1968): Herb. Linn. No. 925.3 (LINN).

Generitype of Phaca Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 176. 1929).

Current name: Astragalus penduliflorus Lam. (Fabaceae: Faboideae).

Note: Phaca baetica was treated as the generitype by Britton & Brown (Ill. Fl. N. U. S., ed. 2, 2: 385. 1913; see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 380. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Green’s choice (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 176. 1929) of P. alpina L.

There is some doubt whether, taxonomically, the Siberian and European plants included by Linnaeus are conspecific. If treated as conspecific, the correct name is A. penduliflorus Lam., “alpina” being pre-occupied in Astragalus by A. alpinus L. (1753).
