Hello and welcome to the IPBES data management tutorials. In this session I would like to briefly present the implementation of the data management policy at IPBES. My name is Joy Kumagai and I am part of the IPBES technical support unit on knowledge and data hosted at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center. In the previous sessions of this chapter we covered the elements of the IPBES data management policy, how it concerns experts, and roles and responsibilities across the platform regarding implementation. In this presentation, I would like to specifically focus on the implementation of the policy and how we organized the next chapters to support you with delivering your tasks in accordance with the IPBES data management policy. Chapter 3 is about data management reports. Data Management Reports are like baking recipes which document in detail not only the ingredients we need to bake a cake but also the process and the steps we need to know in order to bake such a delicious chocolate cake. I would like to emphasis that with simply mixing all the ingredients together we won’t be able to have our cake. The process, and the steps are as important as the list of ingredients. The same is true with data management reports, it documents and reports what we did and how we did it. It allows other to understand our work and repeat it where necessary. In chapter 3 of this tutorial we will extensively discuss IPBES data management reports. My colleagues will provide you in detail how to create and maintain data management reports from A to Z to fulfil the criteria of the IPBES data management policy. We are not dealing with one specific kind of the product in IPBES. We should also learn how to manage data while actively being used, analyzed, and produced. Chapter 4 of these tutorials is designed to provide you with an overview of active research data management, such as recommendations for workflow establishment, and data backups. We also present some examples on this active data management, and guidelines for the use of external data. Besides a well documented recipe one needs to have tools and the knowledge of using those tools to be able to bake the cake. Chapter 5 will provide you with tools for data management, from literature access and data processing tools to references and citations, and ultimately publishing and sharing. We hope this tutorials helps you with the implementation of the data management policy. Happy baking! Thank you very much for your attention. Finally, I would like also to thank the other contributors that helped me prepare this conntent. I hope you enjoyed this session on IPBES and data management. Thank you and good bye.
