This text file explains the contents of the data package used in the manuscript "Linking plant stress and hydrodynamics: evidence from freshwater macrophytes" authored by Davide Vettori, Stephan Niewerth, Jochen Aberle and Stephen P. Rice. Davide Vettori, Politecnico di Torino, Italy. June 2020 ********** Contents ********** 1. File: Metadata.xml This is a standard, Dublin Core, metadata file describing the experiments that took place; giving some context and contact information. It can be opened with a text or xml editor. 2. Folder: Dataset.zip Level 1 data (i.e. post-processed) are organized into 5 files, each of which contains data for the three groups tested. The content of the files is described in the following: - 'EnvironmentalConditions_L1.txt' contains information about the environmental conditions in each group mesocosm and at the collection site at the time of plants collection. - 'HealthStatus_L1.txt' contains post-processed data of maximum quantum yield of photosystem II taken from multiple leaves from each plant. It includes the plant and leaf numbers and the value of maximum quantum yield of photosynthesis. - 'Biomechanics_L1.txt' contains post-processed data of plant morphology and flexural rigidity. It includes plant number, 2-sided surface area, plant maximum length, number of leaves in a plant, 1-sided leaf surface area, mean diameter and second moment of area at the bottom and top parts of the stem. Moreover, the flexural rigidity for the bottom and top parts of the stem is reported. - 'FlowVelocity_L1.txt' contains post-processed data of flow velocity measured 0.05 m upstream of the plant with an LDA for two flow scenarios. It includes transversal (y) and vertical (z) coordinates and time-averaged values of longitudinal velocity over 30 seconds. The origin of the y axis is at the centre of the channel, where the plant was located. The origin of the z axis is at the channel bed. - 'Hydrodynamics_L1.txt' contains data of plant hydrodynamics for two flow scenarios. It includes plant number, mean approach velocity calculated from velocity profiles (reported in 'FlowVelocity_L1.txt'), time-averaged drag force, drag coefficient, and plant deflected height in both dimensional and dimensionless form. 3.
