Material examined. 1 male, cl 5.2 mm ( MZUSP 39507), R / V “Marion Dufresne”, TAAF MD55 / Brésil 1987 Expedition, Brazil, off Espírito Santo, 19º00’S– 37º47’W, Abrolhos Bank, stn 46 DC81, 120– 135 m, coll. M. Tavares, 28.v.1987.

Distribution. Western Atlantic: USA (east and west of Florida), Colombia (off Sucre), and Brazil (off Espírito Santo) ( Gore 1987; Kensley & Heard 1991; Poore 1997; present study).

Remarks. Michelea vandoverae is so far the only species in the genus to present a transverse constriction on the respiratory lamellae of the pleopods ( Figures 13, 14G). The Brazilian material matches well the description and illustrations by Gore (1987) and Kensley & Heard (1991), and represents the first record of the species and the genus Michelea from the southwestern Atlantic.
