Uncorrected inertial navigation dataset collected on board the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the austral summer of 2016/2017 as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). ***** Dataset abstract ***** A HYDRINS Inertial Navigation System (INS) was installed on the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the austral summer of 2016/2017 as it circumnavigated Antarctica as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). This journey also involved the transit to and from Europe through the Atlantic Ocean. This dataset is uncorrected but has been converted from text files to daily comma-separated files for ease of use. Otherwise the dataset has undergone no further processing. It covers the period from November 2016 – April 2017. Heading, attitude, position and speed data are provided. ***** Original data collection ***** A HYDRINS Inertial Navigation System (INS) was installed centrally on the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov and operated using HYDRINS software which was installed on a Microsoft Windows computer, also used to operate the ship’s multibeam echosounder. A Trimble GPS feed was incorporated into the dataset using the HYDRINS software. Data were recorded directly onto the Microsoft Windows computer, then transferred to the expedition’s Network Attached Storage (NAS) using a shared folder on an hourly basis. The time on the computer was not synced other computers or instrumentation on board as far as is known. It is not known if the INS was synced with the GPS. The dataset containing the original files has the DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3369130. For more information about the collection of the original dataset, please see the associated metadata. A corrected version of the cruise track is also available (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3260616). The raw dataset was transferred to University central storage and further an object storage system. The data was converted to comma-separated values (csv) format in daily files using the script ace_motion_data.py that can be found as part of the package science-data-utilsv0.3.0 (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3731330). More information about the cruise and data collection can be found in the full cruise report (Walton and Thomas, 2018; DOI 10.5281/zenodo.1443511). ***** Data processing ***** The data values have undergone no processing, except for that to convert the data files into csv format. In order to do that, the date from the file header was used to insert into each line in the csv data files. ***** Quality checking ***** This dataset has undergone no quality checking. ***** Standards ***** Where possible the parameter names follow the Climate Forecast (CF) Standard Names (version 72, 10th March 2020; http://cfconventions.org/standard-names.html). ***** Dataset contents ***** - ace_hydrins_YYYYMMDD.txt, data file, comma-separated values - data_file_header.txt, metadata, text - README.txt, metadata, text ***** Dataset contacts ***** Jenny Thomas, Swiss Polar Institute, Switzerland.
