L'interprétation de cuando et de quand dans l'historiographie de l'espagnol et du français : étude terminologique et conceptuelle (de 1492 à la fin du XVIIIe siècle)

This article is the first stage in a series of works which aims to analyse the interpretation of cuando and of quand throughout the history of Spanish and French grammaticography when they appear in such phrases as cuando la llamó su padre, se sobresaltó / quand son père l’appela, elle sursauta, knowing that in the present day, the conjunctive interpretation is dominating on the French side whereas the adverbial and relative dimensions are emphasized on the Spanish side, notwithstanding the conjunctive dimension. A corpus of 42 French and Spanish grammar books published between 1492 and the end of the 18th century has been examined accordingly. Although « plural » interpretations exist, it is observed that the majority of the grammarians have a polarized vision, either adverbial or conjunctive. On the French side the conjunctive vision started to dominate in the 18th century, whereas the Spanish point of view stayed relatively well distributed between the adverbial and conjunctive visions.
