Unverified GLONASS track of R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) in the austral summer of 2016/2017. ***** Dataset abstract ***** A Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) recorded the route undertaken by the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during a circumnavigation of the Antarctic as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) in the austral summer of 2016/2017. The data provided in this dataset are raw NMEA strings containing date, time, latitude and longitude, with other NMEA variables allowing the accuracy of the location to be ascertained with one-second resolution. The data have not been quality checked or corrected. Data coverage is from 27th December 2016 until 11th April 2017. ***** Original data collection ***** Two GLONASS antennae were mounted on the crow’s nest of the ship, at a height of approximately 32 metres above sea level. The GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) was operated by the Bridge on board the ship for navigation rather than scientific purposes. The signal was received and transferred to a panel on the Bridge, then via a serial port to another computer running Windows XP, also on the Bridge. A network was setup to be able to access this computer and Franson GPS Gate software (version 2.6) was used to send the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) strings over UDP to the expedition server (LUbuntu 16.10). All NMEA strings were selected to be recorded within the software. Kplex software (version 1.3.4) was installed on the server and was setup to listen to the port that the GLONASS data was being sent to. The NMEA strings were then saved into files and a Python script inserted the data in real-time into the database. Files were also backed-up onto the expedition server (see the code by Pina Estany and Thomas, 2019, DOI:10.5281/zenodo.3360649). At the same time the kplex software served the NMEA strings on a TCP port so anyone on the expedition network could have easy access to the data in real-time. Data collection resolution is one second. There are gaps in the data where the Franson GPS Gate software crashed or there were problems with the expedition server and the data were not recorded. NMEA strings provided by this dataset are: GPZDA PORZX GPRMC GPGGA GPVTG GPHDT GPROT PRDCU GPGSA GPDTM PORZD Full decode information for these strings can be found on the website of the National Marine Electronics Association (https://www.nmea.org/). ***** Data processing ***** Aside from the data collection file manipulation described above, the data have not been processed in any way. ***** Quality checking ***** These data have not undergone any quality checking. ***** Further information for interpreting the data and using the dataset ***** Gaps in the data will be present and there could be errors in the dataset due to equipment malfunction, transfer of data or other unknown sources. ***** Dataset contents ***** - gpsdata-YYYYMMDD.log, data file, text - data_file_header.txt, metadata, text - README.txt, metadata, text Data files include the date (in UTC) on which the data were recorded in the format YYYYMMDD. ***** Dataset contact ***** Carles Pina Estany, Swiss Polar Institute, Switzerland.
