Unverified GPS track of R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) in the austral summer of 2016/2017.

***** Dataset abstract *****

A Trimble Global Positioning System (GPS) recorded the route undertaken by the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during a circumnavigation of the Antarctic as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) in the austral summer of 2016/2017. 

The data provided in this dataset are raw NMEA strings containing date, time, latitude and longitude, with other NMEA variables allowing the accuracy of the location to be ascertained with one-second resolution. The data have not been quality checked or corrected. 

Data coverage is from 21st December 2016 until 11th April 2017.

 ***** Original data collection *****

Two Trimble antennae were located on the helicopter control tower at a height of approximately 21 metres above sea level. The data was passed from the receiver through a serial port connection and then a serial port splitter to a number of the ship’s scientific acoustic instruments and to a computer operating Windows XP. One-second resolution data were passed to the computers operating the multibeam echo sounder, fisheries echo sounders and sonobuoys. 

On the echo sounder's computer (running Microsoft Windows XP), Serial Splitter 5.0 software by Eltima was already installed. Virtual ports were already created from the real COM port for the Echo Sounder software (Echoview) and OpenCPN. Another virtual port was created and the software, NMEA Router, was installed, allowing the data to be saved in GPS NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) strings with one file per day.

The folder that the NMEA Router was writing to, was shared and accessed by the expedition server to read the files and insert the data into the database in real time, as well as to back the files up onto the Network Attached Storage.

Aside from the creation of the data files as described here, the files and data have not undergone any processing. 

***** Quality checking *****

The data files have not undergone any quality checking. Data collection was dependent on the instrument being switched on, and the receiving computer being switched on and working correctly.

Gaps in the data will be present and there could be errors in the dataset due to equipment malfunction, transfer of data or other unknown sources.

Data files include the date (in UTC) on which the data were recorded in the format YYYYMMDD.
