Auditory cues contribute to body representations, influencing behavior and bodily sensations. Manipulating the footstep sounds can induce the experience of having a lighter or heavier body, and alter perceived weight, gait speed, and gender association. Eating disorders are often matching altered body representation: the possibility of an intentional re-shaping seems crucial. It was suggested that high eating disorder levels may alter multisensory integration, interoception[1] and body-size estimation[2], likely related to body dissatisfaction and potentially reducing sensitivity to effects of sound on body perception. Research is needed on body concerns in obesity, improving interventions. We explored sound impact on body perception and its link to interoceptive sensitivity in obesity.
\nA sample of 25 women with obesity (BMI>30kg/m2) were enrolled. We measured binge-eating disorders symptoms (BES) and interoceptive sensitivity (MAIA). A real-time footstep sound modification system was employed [3]. Three sound conditions were created: \"High Frequency\", \"Low Frequency\", and \"Control\". Participants walked while listening to their modified footsteps sounds for each condition. Two motion-capture sensors collected gait movement, they filled a questionnaire to verify their feelings while moving: walking speed, weight, strength, straightness, femininity, agency, proprioception, and pain. We verified the participants’ perceived weight distortion through a body visualizer task. Analysis includes the detection of gait parameters, repeated measures ANOVA, and Spearman correlations.
\nPreliminary analyses with 22 females [age=44.68 (±13.28)] and obesity [BMI=43.91 (±5.06)kg/m2] and [BES score=20.571(±11.35)] showed a significant main effect of sound conditions for perceived weight [F=4.15, p=0.02, η²p=0.16]; lower weight was perceived with higher pitched sounds than lower sounds, [t=2.85, p=0.02]. Also, people felt more feminine in the high frequency condition than in the low frequency, [F=4.07, p=0.02, η²p=0.16] [t=2.85, p=0.02]. For the control condition, we found a significant negative correlation between the body listening MAIA subscale and the body visualizer task misestimation [r=-0,550, p=0.01]. Finally, the high frequency condition, we reported a positive correlation between BES score (eating disorders risk) and body visualizer accuracy, [r=0.468 p=0.03].
\nOur results support the effective modulation of bodily perceptions, i.e. one’s weight and femininity, in obesity through the manipulation of footstep sounds, especially for High Frequency, as in previous work[3]. Also, the more participants felt confident in recognizing emotions by listening to bodily signals, the more their body weight reporting was accurate. However, the gait parameters (i.e., behavioral implicit measure) seemed not affected by the auditory manipulation, possibly because of altered multisensory audio-proprioceptive integration process. To conclude, our results suggest that auditory manipulation might shape explicit cognitions and beliefs about one’s body (i.e., body image) in obesity. This research may pave the way for tailored technologies, diagnostics, and therapies for body perception.
