\nMaterials and Methods
\nFeed solution
\nTwo synthetic olive mill wastewater solutions were prepared based on a previously studied sample. One contained only tyrosol (OMWW I), and the other included tyrosol plus sucrose (OMWW II) to better mimic real wastewater. This setup allowed comparison of tyrosol alone versus in the presence of sugar. Both had about 373 mg/L of tyrosol; OMWW II also contained 2.61 g/L of sucrose to reach the required COD. The pH was adjusted to 5.3 using hydrochloric acid.
\nNanofiltration plant
\nThe setup used a flat NF membrane module with an active area of 0.00472 m², fed by a plunger pump. Given the molecular weights of tyrosol and sucrose, the membrane’s MWCO was suitable for their separation. The system included a flowmeter, pressure gauges at the inlet and outlet, and a balance that recorded permeate mass every 5 seconds. Operating in total recycle mode, both permeate and retentate were continuously returned to the feed tank, and the temperature was controlled by heating and cooling elements. Before experiments, the membrane was rinsed with osmosed water, soaked for 24 hours to hydrate it, and then compacted by filtering osmosed water at 1 m/s and 18 bar for 4 hours, a pressure higher than that used in the tests.
