Abstract (English)

This derived dataset extends the original population dataset by age groups in Latin America (de la Serna, 2026; DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18891177) by adding five calculated demographic indicators for 11 Latin American countries across four reference years (2000, 2010, 2020, and 2023). No raw data were modified; all variables were computed from the absolute population estimates already contained in the source dataset.

The five indicators provided are: (1) Aging Index (AI): ratio of population aged 65+ to population aged 0-14, multiplied by 100; (2) Total Dependency Ratio (TDR): sum of population aged 0-14 and 65+ divided by population aged 15-64, multiplied by 100; (3) Youth Dependency Ratio (YDR): population aged 0-14 divided by population aged 15-64, multiplied by 100; (4) Old-Age Dependency Ratio (ODR): population aged 65+ divided by population aged 15-64, multiplied by 100; and (5) Demographic Bonus Index (DBI): percentage of population aged 15-64 over total population.

Countries covered (n=11): Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The dataset is distributed as a single CSV file (dataset_derived_indices.csv) and is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). Users must cite both this derived dataset and the original source dataset.

Este dataset derivado amplia el dataset original de evolucion poblacional por grupos de edad en America Latina (de la Serna, 2026; DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18891177) incorporando cinco indicadores demograficos calculados para 11 paises latinoamericanos en cuatro anos de referencia (2000, 2010, 2020 y 2023). Los datos brutos originales no fueron modificados; todas las variables fueron computadas a partir de las estimaciones de poblacion absoluta ya contenidas en el dataset fuente.

Los cinco indicadores incluidos son: (1) Indice de Envejecimiento (IE): cociente entre la poblacion de 65+ y la poblacion de 0-14, multiplicado por 100; (2) Razon de Dependencia Total (RDT): suma de la poblacion de 0-14 y 65+ dividida entre la poblacion de 15-64, multiplicada por 100; (3) Razon de Dependencia Jovenes (RDJ): poblacion de 0-14 dividida entre la de 15-64, multiplicada por 100; (4) Razon de Dependencia Mayores (RDM): poblacion de 65+ dividida entre la de 15-64, multiplicada por 100; y (5) Indice de Bono Demografico (IBD): porcentaje de la poblacion de 15-64 anos sobre la poblacion total.

All five indicators were computed exclusively from the absolute population estimates (in millions) disaggregated by age group contained in the source dataset (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18891177). No external data sources were consulted, and no additional imputation was applied. Formulas: IE/AI = Pop.65+ / Pop.0-14 x 100 | RDT/TDR = (Pop.0-14 + Pop.65+) / Pop.15-64 x 100 | RDJ/YDR = Pop.0-14 / Pop.15-64 x 100 | RDM/ODR = Pop.65+ / Pop.15-64 x 100 | IBD/DBI = Pop.15-64 / Pop.total x 100. The population aged 15-64 was reconstructed by summing cohorts 15-24, 25-54, and 55-64 from the source dataset. Results are rounded to two decimal places (44 observations: 11 countries x 4 years).
