GRAMMATICAL AND LEXICAL EXPRESSION OF TEMPORALITY IN PUBLICISTIC TEXTS

Description

This article examines the grammatical and lexical means of expressing temporality in English and Uzbek publicistic texts. Temporality is considered as a multidimensional linguistic category realized through tense–aspect forms, temporal adverbs, lexical time markers, and contextual devices. The study adopts a comparative approach based on contrastive, discourse, and quantitative analysis of mass media texts drawn from newspapers and online news platforms. The findings reveal that English publicistic discourse predominantly relies on explicit tense–aspect forms supported by lexical temporal markers to convey relevance and continuity, while Uzbek media texts tend to express temporal relations through agglutinative verbal morphology and contextual inference. Despite typological differences, both languages strategically employ temporality to structure discourse, foreground urgency, and guide readers’ interpretation of social events. The results demonstrate that temporality functions not only as a grammatical category but also as an important discourse-organizing and pragmatic mechanism in media communication.
