This article marks a key step in the Chronon Field series, directly extending the treatise Time May Not Exist! (Brécheteau, 2025, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17214502). It is standalone, yet fully embedded in a coherent theoretical architecture: a rethinking of time grounded in coherence, not in flow.

The starting point is simple and radical: the vacuum is not empty. But what it contains is neither a background energy, nor a revived ether, nor a modification of spacetime geometry. This work proposes to read the background of reality as a non-energetic rhythmic substrate, carried by the Chronon Field Φ(x) — a local frequency of holding and synchronization.

The core thesis is clear: reality does not “flow”; it holds. Physical processes do not unfold in a universal time but are replayed according to a local, measurable cadence. Φ(x), with dimension [Φ] = s⁻¹, does not curve spacetime and adds no energy–momentum tensor; it re-parametrizes durations, cadences, and observable coherences. General Relativity remains intact, light cones unchanged: only the interpretation of the background shifts, from geometry to rhythm.

What the article does in concrete terms:

it clarifies the status of the substrate (neither medium, nor energy, nor metric);

it fixes a minimal operational framework (Φ, Γ) separating phase from coherence loss;

it reinterprets the quantum vacuum as a field of local synchronization rather than as statistical noise;

it proposes explicit, falsifiable null tests at the 10⁻¹⁹ level (optical clocks, Casimir effect, Lamb shift, phase interferometry), with clear acceptance and failure criteria.

The ambition is not to restore a metaphysical ether, but to rehabilitate the background as a condition for the holding of the real. The substrate is not the cause of phenomena; it is their cadence. Without it, no appearance, no duration, no stability.

This publication prepares the subsequent article, Quantum Rhythm: When Information Breathes in Time, where the rhythmic fabric is translated into an explicit dynamics of quantum coherence (T₂ protocols, qubits, entangled pairs), and more broadly opens a 2025–2026 program on the physics and philosophy of rhythm.
",
